Language select

We should have language select enabled here, to allow easier internationalization. Jon Harald Søby 16:29, 26 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Enabled, see Attendees. --Littlebtc 04:55, 1 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Nice ^^, now we have to update everything. I will do it before he end of next week, perhaps today... depending on few things :) Schiste 06:54, 1 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Template description

Please try to describe the teplates as extended as possible, especially when using such an amount of templates. Otherwise it will be very hard to help. Effeietsanders 13:20, 29 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Huh? According to Special:Allpages, we only have three tempaltes… Do you mean that Template:Languages (which is used the most) is too complex? Jon Harald Søby 17:24, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm, well I don't think {{D|reason}} is that difficult to use, but in case I have added some explainations. Perhaps he is speaking of {{languages}}, I must admit the first time i didn't understood how it was working, but after using it once it's ok. Perhaps re write the explaination of the languages template? Schiste 00:47, 31 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

wm2007: Interwiki prefix is now active

I have added a request : m:Talk:Interwiki_map#Add_wikimania2007.wikimedia.org, so that we can make internal links from Wikipedia to the Wikimania website. Wmania: redirects to Wikimania 2006, not 2007... Teofilo 14:59, 6 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

OH, yeah, thanks for your notice. :) I will ask our website maintainers to do it! --Theodoranian 11:36, 12 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • The prefix is now active. You can use it when linking a page on this wiki from your local Wikipedia. For example to link to the Main Page, you can write : [[:wm2007:Main Page]], or even shorter : [[:wm2007:]] Teofilo 23:06, 4 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Logo proposal

I have uploaded a logo proposal in SVG format to Commons. It is the same as the old logo, but the colours are those of the Flag of the Republic of China, since that's where the conference will be. It was inspired by Torino's logo proposal in the bidding phase. Jon Harald Søby 12:03, 6 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Live Streaming

Hi. I'm working on the live audio stream this year, and need a few people - someone who can get the stream to me, someone who can summarize each day's events, and lots of someones who either won't be going or who live nearby and have decent internet speeds. Details can be found at my WikiCast technological log, and if you can help, please contact me on w:User talk:ST47. Thanks! ST47 20:56, 18 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

No, 14 years old is not too young. I know many youth Wikipedians. :)--Theodoranian 16:41, 1 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh,yes. ^_^ I don't have Notebook computer. Is venue Notebook there? --Shack☆Mania 10:35, 6 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Well, maybe some of the articles are not appropriate for a 14year old but that is more at the discretion at your content blocker set by your guardians than anyone else --User:zrdm 07:31, 3 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

How many days don't I know that should go

I want to meet with the Wikipedian, I would also like to deeper understand community. But how long should I visit? Hurry please! I will fill out the Registration Meeting participation. --Shack☆Mania 09:00, 30 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

It depends. I think you will meet Wikipedians everywhere from the first day to the last day in Wikimania. :P You can also try to understand the local Wikimedia community nearby you before you join Wikimania. If you are in Taiwan, then I can be the first local Wikimedian you know. :) --H.T. Chien (Talk / Contributions) 09:23, 30 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hum...I think you already know about me since I met you on zh.wp sometimes. :D Anyway, you are still welcomed to join the Taiwanese community meetups. --H.T. Chien (Talk / Contributions) 09:22, 30 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Nonsense page

This page is nonsense/spam and should be deleted - اجمل من كل البشر It means the "most beautiful person" and link to someone's website. Aude 16:44, 16 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Administrators

I have made User:Jdforrester an admin on Wikimania2007 site in order to clean up spam and delete pages. He is a trusted user of many projects and a longstanding member of Wikimedia UK, so I used my best judgment. I'm not sure what the process is on this project but I am informing the community here.

If there are no objections, I would like to extend the adminship to permanent status. Bastique 14:54, 25 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism

How can someone mark vandals or vandalism for the attention of a site admin? I just undid some edits by User:FaçaBioDiesel - I think s/he should be given a block, and the image s/he uploaded should be deleted. But more importantly, some obvious way of non-admins to flag this stuff for admins is necessary. Thanks. Cormaggio 15:07, 7 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

How many people are expected to attend?

I would like to ask how many people are expected at Wikimania? How many foreigners are travelling in, and how many Taiwanese will be there? What's the expected audience at the different presentations and panels?

According to this third-party Taipei Times article, more than 500 people are expected to attend. Disclaimer: The organizers of the 2007 Wikimania cannot endorse third party articles about the event; please use the third party information at your own risk. Allentchang 12:35, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Consult the Attendees for tbe breakdown of the participants by nationality. The largest groups seem to be from Taiwan/ROC, the US, and Germany. The nationality list was last updated June 11, 2007. Allentchang 12:49, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have no idea what's the expected audience in different presentations and panels because the registration system does not ask you what panels and presentations you want to attend. The registration system only asks for the particular events you expect to attend like Hacking Days, the Main Conference, and the Citizen Journalism Unconference. Other than that, the Schedule page does tell you the seating capacity of various presentations. Allentchang 12:49, 16 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Cheap flights from Taiwan - suggestions?

Hi - a question for those locals, or at least those that know Taiwan.

I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to get from Taipei to Bali (one way) sometime in the week following the conference. (My brother's getting married in Bali on the 18th - good for him.)

The cheapest ticket seems to be about US$460, with Malaysia Airlines. I'm told that I can't get cheap tickets here in Bangkok, but that there would be cheap flights available in Taipei. Can any of the locals make any suggestions about websites to check, travel agents to contact...? I need to have a ticket before I arrive, to be allowed into Taiwan.

If I can't get much cheaper there's another fairly cheap way but it involves a very long train trip (Bangkok to KL). Thanks in advance! --Chriswaterguy 10:47, 17 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

There is a budget airline based in Singapore called Jetstar/Valuair. You can check out their website. They do offer flights from Taipei to Singapore and from Singapore to Bali, but the problem is that the flight from Taipei to Singapore departs Taipei at 18:25 and arrives in Singapore 23:00. The flight from Singapore to Bali departs Singapore at 19:05 and arrives Bali at 21:35. This means that you would have to stay overnight in Singapore. A "Jetsaver" one-way price from Taipei to Singapore costs US$100. Ditto for Singapore to Bali. A Jetsaver ticket cannot be canceled nor is it refundable.
The Jetstar website does not let you make a multiple city reservation and asks you to contact a travel agent instead. So the point is this: if you are willing to stay in Singapore for one night and find a cheap place to rest, Jetstar/Valueair might be a good bargain.
I will try to find alternatives, but I must warn you that August 18 is still considered a high peak season as Taiwanese tourists love to visit Bali. Allentchang 14:45, 17 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Hi, I am the one left message on your "talk page".
Yup, Jetstar/Valuair is the cheapest choice available now. ( Sorry for not recommending this to you first, coz I miscalculated the fare as Singaporean Dollar first, it seemed terribly high....) Jetstar is the only buget airlines sever Taipei, and its present subsidiary seems to be the only buget carrier flies between Singapore and Denpasar. I searched a local online travel agent and the lowest price is Garuda Indonesia (code-share with China Airlines) for about NTD 9,010 (USD 273.67) and NTD 8,919 (USD 270.9) for online booking, still far more from Jetstar's.
I was thinking if there are any cheap flights depating from Hong Kong, where the connection flights from Taipei are cheaper, so that you still can save some buget. However unfortunately, no. The only airline serve between HK and Bali is Cathay Pacifc, also more expensive than Jetstar.
So I think Jetstar might still be your best choice for the lowest fare. In fact, the non-stop flights from Taipei by EVA or China Airlines are not that kind of expensive with even better services in the off-season . Well, it's summer break now, many tour are heading outside, especially the SE Asia.Tsungyenlee 15:42, 17 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Fantastic info, thanks so much to both of you! Much better than my search results. I think when I searched I saw a price for around $7000 with Jetstar and assumed it was USD, rather than NTD, so didn't look further.
If you have any suggestions for a one-way flight from Bangkok to Taipei, that would also be much appreciated. At the moment it looks like maybe around USD 245 (special deal with KLM that an agent here has access to, if it's still available). That's already not bad, and I don't think there's any budget airlines serving that route, but since you were so good on the other question, I just thought I'd ask, in case you had ideas.
I heard that China Airlines was less safe, though probably not too bad...? (It's more dangerous to just cross the road in Thailand and Indonesia I suspect!) Again, thanks so much! --Chriswaterguy 13:34, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
Response to the safty question first. CAL did have several crashes happened in the 1990's and once in 2002. But they did give great effort to their safty. I personally think you dont need to worry about that too much( certainly, I cant guarantee you anything.....). In fact, EVA and CX did have some minor problems before, the media just didnt "promote" it. Coz things happened on CAL usually more drmatically due to its past record.Tsungyenlee 13:57, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm afraid my poor English might let you not understand me...but I'll try my best...
So far, I can't found any choice that might be cheaper than KLM's. CAL's nonstop is around USD 246 and EVA's is around 264 (you could get 5% off using MasterCard according to EVA's site). There used to be a Thai-based buget airline serve Taipei through a stop-over at Hong Kong, but I cant find thier information now. The only possible way I can think of now is to travel LCC like Airasia from Bangkok to Macau (THB 1900~2300, perhaps equals USD 70) then transfer to flights for Taipei. As I described, there are lots of flights between Macau/Hong Kong and Taipei that make this route cheaper. However, there are three airlines fly between Macau and Taipei: EVA, Transasia, and Macau-based Air Macau. I am still trying to find out the fare of Transasia's and Air Macua's. The only data I have now is EVA's. It's ticket for Macau-Taiepi costs MOP 1500 (USD 186). If you add up Airasia's 70 to EVA's 186, it will be more than KLM's 245, and with a transit needed. Well, the fare of Transasia's and Air Macau's might be cheaper, I dont really know. But I can give you some information for contact if you feel intersted:
  • Transasia/ Macau branch/ 853-2870-1777
  • Air Macau/ Bangkok branch/ +66 2 6143000 (ps. they flies between BKK and Macau, too)

Your English is extremely clear! As I've left this rather late, it's good to have those other options. I'm going out of town for 3 days now, but will make some phone calls, and check back here if I get the chance. Thanks again - you've gone beyond the call of duty! --Chriswaterguy 15:31, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

No problem. It's my pleasure to give you some advice. i just feel sorry about my relatively poor suggestion...Tsungyenlee 15:40, 18 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

hichannel stream

Are there any instructions for using the hichannel player? All I get is an error message in Chinese. --68.109.175.242 23:23, 2 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

That's not an error message. It prompts you to Login, i.e., you're free to watch for the first 1min (I guess less), then you'll need to show your member status. Well, since CHT is also the sponsor, perhaps you can TRY to get a promotional account. -Xparis 09:36, 3 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Audio of the talks?

Are mp3 or .ogg files of the talks posted anywhere? The page Audio/Video Streams deals with planning.

I'm really looking forward to listening to the talks I missed. Thanks again to the organizers and all the volunteers, and of course the speakers and what the heck thanks to all the attendees, for a great Wikimania! --Chriswaterguy 13:39, 29 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
